Strange how my heart beats
To find myself upon your shore.
Strange how I still feel
My loss of comfort gone before.

Cool waves wash over
And drift away with dreams of youth.
So time is stolen
I cannot hold you long enough.

And so, this is where I should be now
Days and nights falling by,
Days and nights falling by me.
I know, of a dream I should be holding.
Days and nights falling by,
Days and nights falling by me.

Soft blue horizons,
Reach far into my childhood days.
As you are rising,
To bring me my forgotten ways.

Strange how I falter,
To find I'm standing in deep water.
Strange how my heart beats,
To find I'm standing on your shore.

Happy Valentine's Day!:iconflowersplz:

Heh, just because I'm single doesn't mean that Aerynne has to be! :giggle: It was about time that I drew a proper pic of these two love birds (horses?) together, and what better excuse than for Valentine's Day? :aww: I can't wait to include Beau in "Revelations" - I need to draw more of him! :la:

Anywho, I hope you all have a lovely day today, whether you're with someone or not. For the first time in a long time, I'm actually not bothered in the slightest that I'm single!

Thanks for looking, love you guys!

Khezix Featured By Owner Mar 7, 2010
Well, hello. 8D *de-lurks* It's been a while since I commented. :p *still catching up on inbox*
Anywayz, I love this piece a lot. It's as eye-catching as Mariposa (which is still my favorite! =p ) I love the soft colors, and I like the fact that you've placed your characters in a scene, lol (more artists need make backgrounds!) The overall mood is nicely conveyed by the colors, expressions, and pose.
I also love how your style has progressed. Your coloring used to be kinda plastic-y (original Khezix term =p ), but now you've added details, like the slight wrinkling of the neck, the definition in the muscles, and the reflected light on their bellies. I love it a lot.

The problem, though, is your style is now at a crossroad and it's conflicting. You still depend on the cartoon eyes, yet the shading suggests your style is beyond cartoon. Same with that line-art there.
I encourage you to make a decision, and take the next step. Do you want to progress to naturalism, or do you want to stay cartoony? Or somewhere in between? You're somewhere between right now, and I like the direction it's taking, but you should focus on the conflicting elements.
Of course, this isn't to say that you must give up on the cartoon style. There are a great number of ways to draw a cartoon eye that blends with a somewhat naturalistic style.
And back to those lines; they also conflict, both with the coloring of subject and the scenery (line-less scene vs. lined subject is a bit awkward). I think you should experiment with line-less. Maybe you decide to drop the lineart, or maybe you still want to keep them, and maybe use them to a minimum. I think your style could go either way. You know how to control your values very well, and you should let your values speak for themselves. Let your lowlights and highlights define the form rather than a solid line. You can still use the lines, of course, but you just won't be as dependent on them.

Finally, the background. As I before said, I love it. But there are some issues there too, including composition. First, the composition has been used to death. Looking merely at the thumbnails of your gallery, your subject is often centered. There are some times when you didn't center your subject and it worked out much better. A centered layout does have its place, but I think this piece would do nicely with an off-centered composition. Maybe you can expand the image to the left, have the couple off to the right, and then re-introduce balance by having the setting sun somewhat near the center on the left side. A composition like that would be more comforting to the eye.
Second, the background is uniformly blurred. I like that it's blurred in the first place; it brings in perspective and shows the viewer "hey, this is the background and it's here, but your focus is the subject there." ;p But the thing is, it's not quite interacting with the subject as it should be when it's all blurred the same amount. The 2 waves in the back would be as blurred as they are now, but that wave just behind their hoofs should be more crisp, and the splashing water (lovely detail, by the way :) ) should be as crisp as the lineart.

I've watched you wean yourself off the Spirit style and it's great--your art is very unique--but I think the time has come to push yourself further, for the sake of improvement. You're doing so well now, and I would love to see you take it further and be the best you can be. :) :)

:+fav:, of course. :aww:

Hai! :icontardwaveplz: Thank you for your in-depth comment, I appreciate you taking the time to write it. :meow: As far as my style goes, right now, I'm happy with where it is. I don't want to go 100% realistic and yet I don't want it to be as simple as Spirit-style. The thing is, a lot of people were re-creating my style and since I changed it to this semi-realistic style, no-one has really been able to replicate it. I've tried colouring without lineart and to be honest, I didn't like it.

I'm still in the process of developing my digital skills, so I've taken what you've said on board. But as far as my style goes, it's gonna be like this for quite a while. ;)
Khezix Featured By Owner Mar 8, 2010
 Yes yes I love where your style is right now. I really do. Of course I don't mean you need to fix it right now--it will evolve on its own. ;) And I of course don't mean to go 100% naturalism, nor 100% cartoon; I was merely giving the two extremes.
And dropping the lineart would be another extreme. In fact, I think your style looks better with the lineart. Everything I've said was merely a suggestion of the many things you could do and I'm leaving it up to you to decide on what you want to do. :)

The development of our skills is a never ending process. ;) Thanks for taking my thoughts into consideration! :aww: Really, you have no idea how much it means to me to get such an open response as yours. <D
